The Ministry of Intellectual Property (MOIP), led by Minister Yong-seon Kim, will jointly host the 2025 Second-Half PCT International Application Seminar with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) at 13:30 on November 27 (Thu) at the Korea Patent Attorneys Association (KPAA) Training Hall in Seocho-gu, Seoul. The seminar is designed to share the latest amendments to the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) system and strategic approaches for its effective use, with WIPO officials attending in person to deliver on-site presentations.
* An international patent application under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) enables applicants to file a single application with WIPO and obtain the effect of filing simultaneously in all 158 member states worldwide.

The program will cover key practical topics, including strategic considerations for using the PCT system, utilization of ePCT, and case studies on the restoration of priority. Participants will gain insights into the evolving domestic and global patent landscape and obtain actionable information applicable to corporate IP strategies. In particular, the seminar will offer direct Q&A opportunities with WIPO officials, enhancing understanding of international filing procedures and recent policy developments.

Korea’s PCT international applications reached approximately 24,000 cases in 2024, maintaining its position among the top four countries globally. With major corporations, universities, and public research institutes increasingly expanding their international filings, early protection of R&D outcomes and strategic management of IP rights are becoming core elements of global competitiveness.

Jeong Yeon-woo, Director General for Patent Examination Policy at MOIP, stated, “The PCT system is a central tool for companies seeking to protect their intellectual property rights in the global market. This seminar will serve as an opportunity for patent attorneys and corporate IP professionals to review strategies based on real cases and respond effectively to changes in the international filing environment.”
He added, “MOIP and WIPO will continue to strengthen communication with stakeholders and promptly provide updates on systems and policies, contributing to the enhancement of global patent competitiveness of Korean companies.”
