Korea·EU IP Cooperation: Seminar on the European IP Systems for Korean Users
-Updates on European patent, trademark, and design systems, filing strategies, and updates on the Unitary Patent and Unified Patent Court-
The Ministry of Intellectual Property (MOIP) announced that it will hold a two-day “Seminar on European Intellectual Property Systems” from October 14 to 15, 2025, at the Korean Patent Attorneys Association Hall in Seoul.
The event is organized under the EU-RoK IP Action, a cooperation project funded by the European Commission and implemented by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and supported by MOIP. The seminar is tailored specifically for Korean users and will bring together key officials from the European Patent Office (EPO), the Unified Patent Court (UPC), EUIPO, and renowned Korean and international experts.
In recent years, Europe’s IP landscape has undergone major reforms, including the launch of the Unitary Patent system and the Unified Patent Court in 2023, as well as the first comprehensive revision of the EU Design Law in over two decades in 2024. The Unitary Patent system enables applicants to obtain a single patent with uniform effect across 18 European member countries through one application, following the entry into force of the Unified Patent Court Agreement (UPCA) on June 1, 2023.
Against this backdrop,, this seminar aims to provide an in-depth understanding of these developments and help address the practical challenges faced by Korean applicants in European filings. Domestic companies and IP professionals will have the opportunity to gain first-hand insights from experts on the latest trends in European IP systems and explore effective strategies for IP protection and dispute management in the European market.
The program will feature in-depth presentations and Q&A sessions on key topics, including:
●Changes in the European IP landscape;
● Recent developments in the Unitary Patent and the Unified Patent Court; and
● Filing and dispute-response strategies focusing on Korean corporate case studies.
Participants are expected to benefit from practical insights through analysis of Korean applicants’ patent filing cases and learn methods to effectively respond to European examiners’ substantive examinations, thereby shortening examination periods.
Director General SHIN Sang Kon of the IP Protection and Cooperation Bureau at MOIP, stated, “Europe is the second-largest destination for patent filings by Korean companies, making it a strategically important market for the protection of technology and brands. The Ministry will continue to provide active support so that our companies and IP professionals can proactively respond to changes in the European IP landscape and strengthen their global IP competitiveness.”
The seminar is open to all interested participants, both online and offline.
Registration is available until October 10, 2025, through the MOIP website (www.moip.go.kr → Notices → Announcements) where a QR code link is also provided.
